Nottinghamshire

Cricket Umpires' Association

   Training

Instruction is available to anyone, umpire or enthusiast who wishes to learn more about the Laws of Cricket and their application. Courses are run jointly by this Association and the Notts branch of the national umpiring body, the Association of Cricket Umpires and Scorers (ACU&S).

The next courses will begin on Monday 7 January 2008 at Trent Bridge Cricket Ground and will last for 10 weeks. The course starts at 7.30 pm but it would help if on the first night, those attending arrive early so that enrolment does not delay the start of the session.

On the first night there will be a brief session together of all those enrolling before they separate into 3 groups in their different locations in the Radcliffe Road stand.

The first group is for those who are new or relatively new to umpiring and will cover the Laws of Cricket which specifically relate to the average one day match, together with the basic techniques of umpiring. This will enable candidates to take the ACU&S GL6 exam, a necessary first qualification towards umpiring.

The second group will be for those wishing to progress further after their previous preliminary course, enabling them to take the ACU&S GL5 exam. It is therefore advisable that candidates have already attended at least one previous course, passed the earlier exam and done at least one year of umpiring.

The third group, for qualified members, will meet on certain weeks throughout the course.

Each weekly session lasts for 2 hours and the fee is 50p per night to cover running costs. Copies of the Laws of Cricket, price £2.50 will be available at the course, although if you join this Association you will be given a free copy. Tom Smith's Umpiring and Scoring, the official text book on umpiring (price about £10) will also be available for purchase.
Car parking is available behind the Fox Road stand in the ground.

Pre-booking is not required to attend these courses, just turn up on the first night and you will be made very welcome.

Short compact courses on one night giving a very basic introduction to the Laws can also be arranged for any club or organisation who can provide the facilities. Please contact us if you would like to take up this offer.

Examinations will be available at the end of the course (March 17) and although these are completely optional they do provide recognised qualifications within umpiring and enable progress to be made within the grades of matches covered by our panel of umpires. Membership of neither this Association nor the ACU&S is necessary to attend the course but if you wish to take the examinations it will be necessary to join the ACU&S. This will be outlined in greater detail at the start of the courses.
